Canterbury District Fairtrade Network
Campaign Update and Events
Campaign Update
"Our first objective was to achieve Fairtrade Zone status for the district of Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay. For this we needed to meet the five conditions laid down by the Fairtrade Foundation nationally:
- The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agree to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
- Fairtrade products must be on sale in a specified number of local shops, cafés and restaurants.
- Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work-places and community organisations.
- There must be a campaign to attract local media coverage and popular support for Fairtrade.
- A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continuing commitment to Fairtrade zone status.
These have all been done, and in January 2006 we were delighted to learn that we had achieved recognition as a Faitrade Zone.
That status has to be renewed annually, so we need to maintain progress on promoting Fairtrade in the district. Can you help with this? Can you get your colleagues at work to agree to use Fairtrade products, or get them sold in the canteen? Can you get your children’s school to declare its support for Fairtrade? How about asking your hairdresser to serve Fairtrade coffee to customers? Or getting the support of any club or association to which you belong? Please do what you can, and let us know. And if you would like to get involved in our activities, organising events and running Fairtrade stalls, we’d love to hear from you.
Our next campaigning focus will be Fairtrade Fortnight - the two weeks in March designated nationally as a special time for raising awareness of Fairtrade. Below is a list of planned events for the district. Please support them.
